Hell ride

6 02 2010

In conjunction with International Fitness Week, the gym organised a spinning class aptly named “Hell Ride” today. It started from 12 noon to 8pm. And today I went for the entire 8 hours and can’t be anymore proud of myself! It was tiring but there were moments of “cyclist high” and it was awesome.

I finished all 8 hours, pretty much back to back with a 10 minute break after 3 hours. I burned an insane amount of calories – 3629 kcals. That’s an average of 450kcals/hour. I could have gone higher but I needed to pace myself to last the entire session.

I had gastric halfway but nothing a banana couldn’t fix. Am off to bed now. Have a good weekend all!

Welcome to Hell!

8 hours later, 3629 kcals burned

Being Lazy

21 01 2010

I have my lazy days and it’s getting more and more evident these days. It’s because I’ve been going to the gym so often the past 1 year that I’m getting very very bored of it.

So I’ve been trying to spice my own workout and vary it so that I won’t be bored but nothing seems to work. That only leaves me with one option – the outdoors. I should pick up a new activity to keep me sane instead of confronting the dreaded treadmill every now and then. I also do have my TRX which is an awesome workout tool.

Today was one fine example of laziness. I was lazy to move my ass to the gym this evening for Tommy’s 90-min RPM class. I had all sorts of excuses running through my head and was tempted to go bury myself in a good dinner with Bubba. Guilt conscience crept up on me faster than I can say McDonalds and I dragged my sorry ass to the gym. But if there’s one thing about Tommy’s class is that it almost instantly perks me up. I’m not sure what it is but none of the classes that I’ve gone ever has that sort of effect on me! I’ve attended so many RPM class and none of them make me push as hard as I do in Tommy’s class.

I attribute this to his music selection which I will say is very much in line with what I have on my iPod to keep me running/biking. I absolutely cannot run with some rock or slow music playing. My mind just shuts off. Anyway, I got quite pumped up the moment class started and by the end of it, I tell myself it’s all worth it despite ending up walking like a penguin. Some joker said I kept going for Tommy’s class because I was after his (edit: Sounded so wrong after reading this again!) THE banana that he gave out at the end of every class. I will admit that I like to eat bananas but I’m not that crazy!!! I make it a point to have one prior to class anyway if I haven’t snacked on anything.

On another note, call me crazy, I actually dropped an email to Fitness Ridge to enquire about their rates and programme. Yes, I was considering signing up for a 1 month 24/7 bootcamp in Utah! Until their reply came back to me informing me that their next available slot is only in August 2010! Can you believe it!? It’s so popular that I wanna open one too! :P Back to the story – yes I was seriously contemplating it. I even asked Bubba for his opinion. Afterall it’s only 1 month, I was planning in my head on how to request leave of absence from work and I was ready to part with US$6K+ for 1 month of bootcamp training! I was looking so forward to it … but now, bah! Gotta think of something else.

I have this tendency to start new things without really completing what I’ve started previously. So I’ve been thinking for the longgggest time about getting a bike but since it ain’t no cheap bike from a supermarket, I ought to put more thought into it. I’ve been eyeing on a road bike but I have this fear about uncleating myself off the bike and end up crashing. Actually I think it’s the crashing part which scares me more than anything. Bicycle crashes used to be a norm when I was a kid and I’d come back with scars and blood somewhere or another. Then again, I’ve been a klutz all my life. Anyhooo, investing in a bike is like investing in stocks because aside from the money factor, I need to make sure it doesn’t end up as a poor investment decision :P

Going back to my earlier point about changing my routine, I’m also thinking of signing up for triathlon training – saw a few website that offers such training. This has been on my mind for a while but I’ve never put much consideration into it. So maybe it’s time I re-focus myself and sign up. Maybe I’ll like it? Bunny told me there’s a mini-triathlon – so tempted to sign-up but I think I should fully train for one first.

Nike Human Race 10k

24 10 2009

So I ran with the world  this morning. It was alright, pretty flat terrain except for the 8th km where there was a little hill and that’s where the running stitch came back to haunt me. I’m happy that it’s not haunting me at the early part of my run (previously it usually comes at the 3rd – 4th km). Anyway, the crowd at today’s run as everyone expected turned out to be very big. So there were moments of walking because the running lane was so small and there were people walking in 1 line across the running lane :\

For me, it’s an achievement to complete it .. timing doesn’t really matter at this point of your life where you’re just learning to run, literally. I managed to shave only about 5 minutes off my Standard Chartered KL Marathon time,  but that’s also partly because I haven’t really been running of late.

I have another marathon next weekend and I’m starting to feel my knees giving way, bah! I also paid a huge price for today’s running – chaffing! OMG, you have no idea how painful chaffing is until you get it. I only realised I had it after the run when I was walking to the bus stop and I felt some slight burning sensation, I looked down and I was right. Try showering when you have chaffed thighs, man its like you’re stung by a jellyfish! Argh, I should revisit the running shorts thingamajig, time to look into running tights to prevent chaffing.

The weighing scale lied …

30 09 2009

I should really ditch the scales. No wait, scrap that, I should stop weighing myself so often because I end up beating myself over the plateau. One thing I know for sure, despite the non-movement of my actual weight, my clothes size have been dropping. I think it’s time I start looking for new work pants. The one I’m using now seem to be dropping further and further.

It’s a good “problem” to have and I’m not complaining but me being anal about things, I just wish I can go past my resistance level :(

It’s very hazy today for some strange reason, probably not a very good idea to go outdoor RPM to breathe in the smog. I just got back from a 1 hour and 45 min workout, my legs are burning from all that workout.

I’ve also been thinking of getting myself a bike to start outdoor cycling. It’s been on my mind for a long time now. My birthday is in 28 days time … wonder who will be my Santa this year. But before I jump in, I need to do a bit more research on this.

Bad hair decisions.

22 09 2009

What a weekend! The long weekend was meant to rest, rejuvenate and relax but it turns out that I need another holiday to recuperate from this short one. Call me mad but I was hanging out at the gym most of the time during my weekends, spending on average 1.5 hours – 2 hours minimum at the gym. RPM back home is fun, the class participants make it very fun – you hear people grunting and going “Woohoo!!” …  it’s all very fun and amusing at the same time. You don’t see that happening in RPM classes here in Singapore, people are relatively subdued? The RPM instructor in Fitness First KL was Eric C., and Tim told me he’s a lawyer. He looks like Mr Incredibles, that’s some body there :P

Sunday night was a good friend’s hen’s night. Was feeling rather sick-ish but I went ahead since I promised to be there. A small group of us with one too many alcohol consumption! Not a good idea when you’re on a diet but dancing works it off? I ended up getting home only at 5am and driving home was such a struggle because my head was pounding so badly from all the music and drinks. We stopped by at Chinatown for a quick supper but that didn’t help. Should have known better. Once I got home, I showered and crashed until 6 hours later, I dragged myself out of bed and drove to get my haircut.

Not a good idea.

When you have a massive headache and hangover, it’s not a good idea to go and cut your hair. Chances are, you would give your hairstylist free reign with her scissors and that’s what I did. She took a good 6-7 inches off from my long mane (about time!) and after the wash and blow, I felt light-headed. Like literally!! My head feels so much lighter. Since I have thick hair and so much hair was taken off, can I now safely say that at least 1kg is off me now? Hur hur hur …

Feeling High!

2 09 2009

It’s Wednesday and we all know what Wednesday means – Tommy’s famous 90-min gruelling “Precision Cycling” session. In keeping to what I said in my last post, I’ve been working my butt off this whole week and having an eagle eye on my food intake. Work has backed off a little bit although there are still some teething issues but at least I have my temporary accomodation off my mind for now. I’ve been working out twice a day since Monday and my body’s feeling a little sore now.

Anyway, back to the cycling session, I got there a bit early today and did a bit more stretching than I would normally do. Since my arms and back are not exactly feeling that great, I thought it was best to get it all stretched out. I’m very excited to blog this because mid-way through class, I experienced a sudden high – a feeling as if I’m on top of the world and that I’m not feeling any pain at all when I should be. It’s usually at this point where the body would just rebel against you and scream bloody murder for the torture that you put it through. But not tonight! I felt no pain during that period, I didn’t feel breathless, I think my heart was racing but I definitely didn’t feel that it was. And best part was, I notched up on the resistance level whenever I could. Wahh, I love that feeling of sudden euphoria!! The rush I felt made me wanna cycle harder. The music that was playing definitely helped and I caught myself nodding to the beat a few times :D

Runners experience “Runners High” – something which I’ve never experienced and will probably never experience it unless I can consistently run long distance, which at this moment doesn’t look like it. However, I think the “High” also applies to other activities and biking is probably one. I googled a while ago and there are people who have come across this experience as well.

I’m feeling happy .. hee hee. My left hand wasn’t numb too. After class, Tommy came over to say that I did well during class today and I felt on top of the world! Hahaha. I highly recommend spinning/RPM classes – it’s the best workout and you’ll feel great after class.

On a side note, apparently the shortlisted participants for Biggest Loser Asia have been chosen and contacted. I didn’t get any calls so obviously I’m not in but that’s again, very much expected! For those who didn’t get chosen and if you’re reading this, please don’t be sad and beat yourself emotionally over it! Instead do something with your life, START TODAY and not delay! You control your own destiny and life path, if you’ve taken that one step to audition for Biggest Loser Asia, then take the NEXT STEP to change your life forever – start exercising, be healthy and live your life to the fullest! You can do it!! If anyone ever needs a running partner or even to go RPM classes with at the gym, drop me a line and I’ll be there :)

Why like that?

31 08 2009

I’m starting to get bored with working out at the gym. The gym, being my second home doesn’t seem very enticing anymore. Maybe it’s because I spend too much time at the gym! And to think I have another 56+ sessions to go at the gym seems daunting. Lately the gym feels really cold, so much so that it’s taking me longer time to break a sweat. Which may explain why I’m starting to prefer working outdoors? Take RPM for example, OUB is the only place (if i’m not wrong) where the class is conducted outdoors and I have no complaints because I sweat it all out and it’s good to be away from aircon. I was at the Cycling Studio in ORQ last Saturday and despite me turning off the fan, I was freezing after 30 mins of cycling and sweating probably made things worst.

If I had my way and if I ever become a Personal Trainer one day (which is a near impossibility given that I still lack stamina and strength in a lot of areas), I wouldn’t train my clients solely at the gym. Instead I’d do varieties. I know of one Personal Trainer (PT) who seem to do things differently from most PTs that I’ve observed. Some of the things this particular PT does:

  • Run marathons with his clients to encourage and motivate them from start to finish
  • Does jungle/hill trekking with his clients
  • Biking with clients
  • Guides his clients on nutrition – grocery shopping done together while explaining nutritional aspects of food and reading food labels.
  • Gives food log/journal to the clients to start recording their food intake
  • If he’s working out with the client at the gym, he works out together with them.

And these are all obviously done outside of the gym. I don’t think he charge additional fees for some of the items above but it shows quite a level of dedication. I reckon if he takes you out for jungle trekking it can be considered as one session even though it may not necessarily be confined to 1 hour? Some activities are done in small groups of 2-3 (e.g. trekking/biking/grocery shopping) people as well and he gets good reviews from his clients. Anyway, maybe there are reasons not to do this but I guess some variety is good.

Speaking of PTs, I notice one bad habit which preoccupies a number of PTs at Fitness First – sms-ing while training their client. I don’t know what is more annoying – the trainer sms-ing and counting reps while you’re doing your ab crunches or the fact that you’re paying him money to continue sms-ing while you struggle with your weights/reps. I mean, if it was dead urgent, the person would have called, not text you right? This is just my opinion but I get annoyed when I see this happening at the gym. I was standing some 3-feet distance away from one PT who was sms-ing non-stop for 3-minutes and he had one hand on the handle bar of the ab-crunch machine and another texting away. The whole time, his eyes was fixated on his phone and counting (even though the counting and reps didn’t match). Like seriously?! Another PT was so engrossed with the Manchester United match replay showing on one of the 6 TVs at the gym that it was as if his client was non-existent. Haha, anyway these are just random observations that I pick up at the gym, annoying traits but nothing I can do.

Enough of the rant. I finally have my temporary accomodation (for the next 2.5 months) sorted and I can finally breathe easily now. Now I just have to make sure I finish packing in the next 2 weeks! I managed to get a proper workout today – spent an hour this morning and 50 mins during lunch for RPM. I should start running again, will probably run this Thursday evening after work. Tommy, if you’re reading this, I might just take up your offer to run one day except .. uhm, give me chance ok .. haha, I don’t run very well and I can’t compete with your iron-legs!

I’m off to bed, gonna hit the gym tomorrow morning again.

Why torture yourself to 90mins of pure “hell”?

5 08 2009

Because it’s a great workout and I’m not saying it because I’m being psychoed to do it :P

I was introduced to RPM (or spinning as some clubs would call it) by Janet when I spent some time back in KL beginning of the year. After my first class, I was hooked and never looked back since. So I started attending regular RPM classes during lunch at the gym and they usually last for 50 mins.

One day, a colleague told me there was a RPM class held every Wednesday night which last for 90 mins! My initial reaction was – Hell no! I avoided that class for some reason and only went for the usual 50 minutes one. So last Wednesday after a stressful day at work plus the fact that I wasn’t losing any weight which got me all upset – I went for the class. Tommy conducted the class and as my Twitter says – he’s a machine! I’ve never seen anyone’s legs work that fast! They don’t call him IRONMAN for no reason.

Anyway, back to the class – I thought the additional 40 mins on top of my usual 50 mins class was bearable and that it shouldn’t be that bad. Let’s just say that this class is totally different from the usual class that I’ve been going to so when I hit the 30 min mark, I was like “Why am I doing this again!?”. It was a great class because I felt so good after sweating everything out. We also got a banana each as reward and let me tell you a banana never tasted so good after a workout! Hahaha. The following day, I was greeted with a very sore bum and crotch :P But that’s just my fault as I didn’t wear my cycling tights for the class.

I went for the class today as well. The music really gets you moving but I think I’ve not had enough sleep or rest the past few days so I was flat out tired at certain intervals.

Any RPM enthusiasts? Let me know :)

Random 8)bservations

30 05 2009

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! I read on DailyMuscle’s facebook that The Biggest Loser ASIA would be happening soon! Recruitment for contestants would be happening sometime in July/August. BUT apparently to qualify, one would need to have about 100lbs to lose :( I really wanna give it a go though.

I don’t mingle around when I’m working out at the gym. I find that very counter-productive because you lose focus of what you’re suppose to do and that just takes away your attention span. When CK hits the gym with me, I work away from him. And that means if we are on treadmills, I will take the treadmill behind him or the furthest from him. I think I get distracted very easily so it’s best I workout further from people that I know. CK still refuses to touch weights and I don’t know how to convince him otherwise but hopefully he’ll get his bum moving one day and start doing some weights and not just walk on the treadmill at 6.0 speed and incline of 15. Maybe I should consider getting him PT sessions for his birthday but I would also run the risk of him NOT using it at all like how he doesn’t really go to the gym that often. Oh well.

Anyway, today’s topic is on random observations. This would be centred around the gym that I work out most often and I won’t say where :P

1) D – We introduced ourselves one day at the shower and she commented how I looked great and that I’ve made good progress. She is under a trainer as well and so far she’s lost about 7kgs. I see her pretty much every other day at the gym and she works really hard on the stepper (Level 15 ok!). She sweats so much that it’s not even funny – it looks like someone’s thrown a bucket of water over her. She’s usually on the stepper for an hour when not training and the stepper would be DRENCHED with sweat all over. Now, I have no problems with people sweating but how do they continue working out for 1 hour on the same machine with sweat pouring at all angles and not consider wiping themselves every now and then?? It’s almost disgusting and I can’t stand not wiping myself.

If a flu breakout were to happen, the gym’s gonna be the first place for a mass breakout. There’s also no disinfectant spray at the gym for some reason. It’s the same for the gym where I workout during office hours – the treadmills electronic panels have sweat ‘sprays’ all over and the sides are all covered with sweat. The guys who run on the treadmill just don’t wipe themselves and with them bouncing on the treadmill at speed 13, that’s like a dog shaking excess water off every now and then.

2) Olga – I don’t know her real name but since I saw her the first few times, she somehow comes across to me as ‘Olga’. I’m not sure why the affiliation with ‘Olga’ but she just looks like one. I think she’s Italian. I think she’s about 40ish with jet black hair. Her workout outfit from Adidas is all black and she has a distinct top which is bareback. She also speaks with a heavy accent which I can’t make out where it comes from. She too is under PT. We exchange smiles every now and then. Regardless of her shape and size, let me just say that she wears the MOST SEXIEST and EXPENSIVE lingerie ever. I may not know my Victoria Secret’s that well but trust me when I say it’s the sexiest and expensive. And it’s all black! She also wears this dominatrix-style-killer heels which is also Black. After gym, her clothes would also be black. Maybe the only thing missing is a whip? *whiplash*

3) There’s one trainer that I don’t really like even though  he has not done anything to me :P OK so this might be a scorpion trait but you know how when someone gives you bad/shit vibes you kinda back off from them? He has this persona that he’s the best, drop dead handsome and the greatest dude in the gym. puhlease! Have you checked the mirror yet kiddo?

4) Today at the gym near my house, 2 ladies were observing 1 male trainer doing stretching exercise on this other lady. The 2 ladies (rather old) were gawking so openly and were commenting rather loudly something along the lines of “How can she let him touch her like that?”. Dude, it’s stretching exercises, not fondling!! Sheesh. And these 2 ladies were gawking for a good 20 mins. Maybe they secretly wanted to be “touched” that way as well. Hahahaha. Anyway I notice very often that stretching exercises done by a male trainer on a female customer often gets the most looks/comments from other women. People new to gym are usually not aware how important stretching is and they fail to see that point but are very good at jumping to stupid conclusions. Although, I would have to say that there are women out there (so far the ones I know are in their early-late 40s) who are more interested in the massage/stretching part than the workout. I heard a lady groan and moan very loudly once while the trainer was stretching her and sure doesn’t sound like she was in pain :P Haha.

5) Today, a lady (possibly late 20s) walked past me in the shower and proceeded to slap my bum and said I have a cute bum. Taken aback, I smiled and muttered a thanks and tried walking away. She then proceeded to say ‘I MEANT IT’. Okkayyyy … like how am I supposed to react? I don’t know if I should take it as a compliment or … nevermind. Lucky thing she didn’t grope my butt as I might have done a face slamming thingamajig on her as a ‘natural reflex’.

6) Color-coordinated auntie — she has the quirkiest color combo ever. One day she’ll be in hot pink (full attire), and another time in striking yellow. She even has matching shoes and water bottle. She looks rather old but I’d give it to her for trying to live a colourful life.

7) Let’s talk about the males at the gym. Couple of funky characters. There’s one guy who regularly works out at the gym. Man, he loves the mirror so much. He would smile so often at himself at the mirror and adjust his hair ever so often. Nothing wrong with that but I thought it was just weird to do it like every 10 minutes!

8) There’s another guy who threw (yes he threw) his dumbell up in the air and caught it with his other hand and he did that like 20x interchanging with each hand. I wonder who taught him that exercise.

Ok I think that pretty much covers it. Although I work out seriously at the gym, I do my random observations every now and then :P I have no intention of being mean but I thought these are observations which I see pretty often.

Southern Ridges

17 05 2009

For those who live in Singapore, the Southern Ridges is nothing new. I’ve been wanting to tryout the Southern Ridges for a while but I:

  1. could never get up on time!
  2. hit the snooze button one too many times
  3. feel lazy
  4. slept in because it’s raining

… and the reasons go on and on. I had my alarm set this morning to wake me up at 7am and after hitting the snooze button a few times, I decided to haul my ass off the bed and get ready. We reached Harbourfront MRT exit at about 830am and started off the walk from Marang Trail. This trail is only 0.8km but it took me and CK longer than 15 minutes to finish because we stopped a few times to look at some stuff and catch our breath! Walking on an incline of 15 on a treadmill aint the same as walking up Marang Trail! I think our ego got bruised a few times when we saw some fit elderly people walking and passing us! Anyway, we reached the top (i.e. Mount Faber) and the view was really nice. The weather was cloudy so that was a bonus! We spent about 1.5 hours walking from Marang Trail all the way to Alexander Arch. Some pictures … click on them to view the larger version.

Someone has written a very good guide of the Southern Ridges and you can read it here, that’s how I found my way around ;) My advice is, go early, wear a cap and good walking shoes and a bottle of water. It was good fun, good to be away from the hustle and bustle of city life and smell the greenery for once. We covered close to 5km in 1.5 hours. We walked most of the way and you still sweat through your shirt during such walks. Blame the humidity.

The next one I’m thinking of going is the HSBC Tree Top Walk. It spans 4.5km but I need to know how to get there first.

I can’t believe the weekend is over! Sigh … I have so much work to do in the office. It’s almost like I’m running 2 full time jobs – one at the office, another at the gym — although I’d prefer to hang out at the gym than the former ;P

Have a good week ahead!
